AVOIDING HARMFUL CHEMICALS
Gold, particularly, white gold, is susceptible to attack by some elements, although platinum or palladium don't generally react to outside agents.
Mercury is recognized today as a poisonous elements with which we avoid contact. It is also an enemy of gold and will destroy any gold jewelry. If you get mercury on any gold jewelry, immediately take it to your local jeweler for repair.

CHLORINE PROBLEMS
Chlorine also reacts with gold, making the metal brittle and prone to cracking. It is best to remove any jewelry if you are coming in contact with chlorine whether it is in cleaning solutions or even in the swimming pool. If it does come in contact with chlorine, rinse off your jewelry immediately.
